Who We Are

Tom Horn

tom@globalirrigationsolutions.com

My dream to start an irrigation company has been 25 years in the making. My background in law enforcement gave me an appreciation for the value of thorough training and integrity, and I am motivated by this to provide quality irrigation systems and professional service.

Continuing to enhance my knowledge and personal growth is a priority, including being at the forefront of the latest innovative technology. My certifications through the Irrigation Association include CIC (Certified Irrigation Contractor) and the CLIA (Certified Landscape Auditor), backflow preventer testing certification through ABPA, Missouri State Commercial applicators license to apply lawn chemical applications.

I train Irrigation Consultants throughout the United States and have taught in India. It is my desire to share my experience and knowledge to train individuals that will provide their customers with the highest quality and best practices in irrigation installation and service.

It is with utmost respect and enthusiasm that I join my partners that share the same focus on providing the highest quality irrigation training, consulting and irrigation water management in the world!

I haven't seen it all, but I’ve seen a lot in my almost 30 years in the landscape irrigation industry!  Over the years, I’ve been a golf course superintendent, installer, service technician, auditor, designer, water manager, irrigation instructor, and consultant.  I’ve worked for large irrigation companies, irrigation consultant companies, a major manufacturer, and have run my own business.

In 2002 I made a commitment to trying to improve the landscape irrigation industry as an irrigation instructor and curriculum developer for Rain Bird Services Corporation.  As I earned my certifications through the Irrigation

Association, I also transitioned to the role of Landscape Irrigation Consultant, focusing on efficient irrigation design and auditing.  I also worked with the Irrigation Association as Chair of the designer common interest group as well as an irrigation committee member of the Minnesota Landscape and Nursery Association.

Over the years, my irrigation work has brought me all over the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, China, and Australia.   I have performed many hundreds of irrigation audits and evaluations. I have created hundreds of efficient irrigation designs for residential, commercial, and large commercial properties.

I am excited about this new chapter at Global Irrigation Solutions. We come together to create a powerful team committed to making the industry better.

In the late 1990s, I started my irrigation career by performing maintenance crew work at a golf course in Hudson, Ohio.  While earning my degree in agronomy and golf management at The Ohio State University, my passion grew and helped me to quickly advance to a golf course superintendent position with The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club in Sanibel Island, Florida.  At the same time, opportunities arose that led me to obtain a contractor’s license and start my own irrigation company in Fort Myers, Florida.  After operating my company for nearly 18 months, I wanted experience with larger projects and opportunities to grow faster than what a small business would allow.  To accomplish this, I closed my company and took a position as an irrigation design engineer with Stahlman-England Irrigation headquartered in Naples, Florida.  In this position, I was responsible for all design and estimating

activities for their field office in Sarasota, Florida.

In 2008, as the construction market took a major downturn, I took my first step in helping to elevate the irrigation industry by accepting the position of the technical trainer with Rain Bird.  In 2010, I was promoted to the senior technical trainer position responsible for three education programs offered by Rain Bird Training Services.  As a trainer with Rain Bird, I had the privilege of training irrigation professionals in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Australia, Thailand, Scotland, England, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Jamaica.  Through the power of technology, I was also able to train in many Eastern European countries through internet-based live-streaming sessions.  I enjoy teaching so much that I returned to school and earned another degree in technical education from Northern Arizona University.

Bringing nearly 24 years of experience from all sides of the industry and multiple Irrigation Association and other industry certifications to Global Irrigation Solutions, I am looking forward to facing new challenges.  I await the opportunity to improve water efficiency across the globe.

During nearly a decade working for Rain Bird as an instructor, providing remote software support, and finally as a Field Service Engineer, I have had the opportunity to work in all 50 states and more than a few foreign countries in the residential, golf, and commercial markets.  From digging holes to providing high-level consultation, I've been lucky enough to touch on virtually all aspects of our industry.  With over 30 years of general building/landscaping under my belt, I  bring a multi-disciplinary trades background with me that has served me well.

During the time I spent developing and delivering irrigation instruction, I gained an appreciation of the benefits provided by continuing education.  I currently hold the Certified Irrigation Contractor (CIC), Certified Landscape

Irrigation Auditor (CLIA) and Certified Golf Irrigation Auditor (CGIA) designations through the Irrigation Association and have held licenses in both waste water and general residential/commercial construction in the past.

Being part of the GIS team is a dream come true for a guy like me.  Working for and with some of the best people in the irrigation industry is my daily life and I'm thrilled to experience the challenge.

I have been in the golf course industry for 41 years, performing everything from golf course setup, maintenance, irrigation repair, and installation.  For the last 33 years, I exclusively supported the Rain Bird product line installing, servicing, and troubleshooting systems in several states.  During my career, I was the manager for Boynton Pump and Irrigation Supply in Stuart Florida, President of Southwest Irrigation (Rain Bird Golf Distributor) in Tulsa Oklahoma, irrigation manager at Admiral’s Cove in Jupiter Florida, and an irrigation technician at a few clubs in Oklahoma and Louisiana. Immediately prior to joining Global Irrigation Solutions, I had been providing factory direct

service in South Florida and the Caribbean as a Rain Bird employee since 2008.

Golf course and commercial irrigation has been my life and I really enjoy getting paid to have fun every day.  I’m proud to be a part of the GIS team and ready to continue to provide solutions to my current friends and the new ones we will make along the way.

Even with 17 years in the irrigation business, it is still fun to learn and see something new every day. I started my golf irrigation career at S.V. Moffett in Upstate NY, later moving on to large commercial irrigation companies in Roanoke, VA, and Maine. I finally packed up to move to warmer weather after hiring on at Rain Bird to provide factory-direct field service in southwest Florida.  In this market, I have met some pretty amazing people and have seen/serviced some of the largest golf course layouts in the world. They just don't build them like this up north. Looking forward to learning new things, meeting new people, and just enjoying having a career that doesn't feel like work

I switched career paths in 2015 from the Marine Industry, where I spent 12 years as a mechanic and Machine Shop Foreman, to the Golf Industry. The switch came easier than expected because of how similar the dynamics are between the two industries. A certain level of excellence is required in both, and I strive to bring that to the table on every job, no matter how big or small it is. It has been refreshing to work with so many different people and see so many different aspects of the Golf Industry.

From 2015 to 2019, I worked on the golf course equipment side. I trained on a variety of equipment, but mostly on greens and fairway mowers. In 2019, I

had the opportunity to join Rain Bird and their team of factory-direct service representatives. I immediately began extensive introductory and golf specific training. I have continued training where possible to keep the knowledge sharp, but I learn best in the field. I enjoy a challenge and the process of troubleshooting. 2021 brought a new opportunity to join the Global Irrigation Solutions team. I am excited to continue growing in the Golf irrigation industry with GIS.

I have lived in Florida for 42 years. I worked in retail construction overseeing the building of retail stores from the concept to the grand opening along with installing the systems required. I decided to change Careers and go into irrigation systems. Since 2019, I have been working on irrigation in central Florida on residential and commercial Properties. I have continued to grow my knowledge of irrigation systems and their effectiveness along with the challenges of irrigating in Florida's climate along with other unique opportunities of central Florida. With my continuing desire to grow in the irrigation field, I joined GIS in the second half of 2023 where I have grown in my knowledge of Golf and commercial irrigation systems.  I am looking forward to growing my knowledge and bringing that knowledge and dedication to our golf and commercial clients.
